Dear Subscriber

Welcome to our news update. In our previous edition we mentioned that we had just received notification that DDL had been selected as a finalist in the BETT Awards 2009 for our Safe Learner learning materials. This was really great news for all of us! We attended the awards ceremony in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Park Lane, London in January.

Although we did not come first in our category - Further Education and Skills Digital Content - we were delighted to have made the final and were proud to be recognised for our work alongside many large and well known e-learning and educational technology companies.

The BETT Awards is an annual scheme that highlights exemplar digital products intended for the education marketplace. The BETT judges shortlisted our product because of its "rich and well designed content". In addition they commented on its "clear pedagogical structure" and stated that it was "very relevant to the curriculum". Click here to find out more about Safe Learner.

Later in January, DDL had a stand at the Learning Technologies Show at Olympia in London. This show is Europe’s leading showcase of organisational learning and the technology used to support learning at work. We also presented a seminar on 'Flexible e-learning solutions' which was very popular and provoked some interesting discussion.

The show proved to very successful for us, we met many people on our stand over the two days and were delighted with the response to the products we were showing. Some work has already started with people we met at the show, and we hope to work with other new contacts from the event in the near future.

One of the products that attracted particular interest at Learning Technologies was the CCNSG National Safety Course Materials that we created for The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB).

The materials were created from an original set of outdated Powerpoint slides provided by the client. ECITB required face-to-face materials creating to send out to trainers to ensure their course was being presented in a consistent manner. They needed a solution that took the Powerpoint slides and improved them in terms of look and feel, originality of approach and interactivity.

To fulfil the brief, DDL created a generic presentation framework to present the materials. This meant that when ECITB returned for further similar work after the success of the first product, we were able to reuse the framework with new content. This led to a faster turnaround and more efficient production.

We applied our educational know-how to re-write the course materials into a fully interactive coherent face-to-face course that was user friendly for the presenter and stimulating for the learner.

The solution has proved so successful and flexible that we have been approached by ECITB to rework the materials into Polish to help foreign workers to pass the course.
