WHAT WE DO
Case study
PORTLAND COLLEGE
SPECIAL NEEDS VLE
The brief
Portland College is a national specialist residential college for people with a wide range of physical disabilities. They received special European funding towards a joint research project with The University Of Teesside. The project aimed to empower physically disabled students to access and use basic online technology that previously was impossible due to physical restrictions.

The solution
In collaboration with PhD students from the University of Teesside, DDL created an innovative virtual learning environment designed with simplicity and ease of use in at its heart. The product integrated a simple e-mail system with a calendar and educational content. The system gave students the confidence to interact online, an area that was previously unavailable to them.

Using recognised symbols and pre-created statements and keywords, students log in and use the system. Various accessibilty options are availble including the ability to scroll and select the symbols with one touch using an ability switch.

The opportunity for students to email each other, family and friends and to use an online system with ease and confidence achieved the goal set out by Portland College and continues to benefit current students.

DDL used expertise in the following areas for this solution:
Adobe Flash
Microsoft .Net
SQL Database
