LEARNING AND SKILLS COUNCIL
ASSESSING THE WORKPLACE AND EMPLOYER TRAINING
The brief
The Learning and Skills Council funds and plans learning and training for young people and adults in the UK including apprenticeships and work experience.

To ensure learners are entering a safe and compliant workplace, LSC funded organisations assess companies prior to placing apprentices with them. All companies must comply with strict procurement standards developed for the LSC by the Health and Safety Executive and the DFES.

Workplace assessors must be highly trained in how to investigate and report on companies within a range of industry types, each with their own compliance and health and safety issues.

To enhance assessor training, the LSC required a tool that allowed assessors to practice and work through a range of scenarios individually, at their own pace.

The solutionDDL developed a highly interactive CD-ROM that aims to develop the knowledge and skills of the assessor by creating three levels to work through - from having limited knowledge and no experience, to being able to complete a workplace assessment report without support.

The CD-ROM integrates a range of media types to provide an engaging, interactive and effective learning tool.

Assessors first select their level from the three options. They then choose a scenario from 12 virtual workplaces - from hairdressers to construction sites.

The assessor then works through a health and safety assessment, viewing several 360˚ panoramas of the workplace to see visual evidence of the area. The user can choose to view related documents such as the establishment's health and safety documentation and can even check the contents of their first aid kit. To further add to the realism of the tool, users can choose to listen to questions asked to managers and staff at the workplace with audio responses.

Each section has a question set to allow the user to view their progress and to discover areas that require more work. Upon completion of level 3, the assessor will fill out a workplace assessment report that is then printed out and used as evidence of their training and skill level.

The product proved to be so successful that the LSC commissioned another 4 workplaces to be added, giving the workplace assessors a wider range of training scenarios.
