An innovative online learning and assessment route for the Level 3 accredited qualification - Supporting Children and Young People's Speech Language and Communication.

The Communication Trust is a coalition of almost 50 not-for-profit organisations. They work together to help everyone who works with children and young people in England to support their speech, language and communication.

Their work focuses on supporting children and young people who struggle to communicate because they have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) as well as supporting all children and young people to communicate to the best of their ability.

The Brief

In the past The Communication Trust had created PowerPoint learning materials to assist students to study a Level 3 accredited qualification. In order to allow early years practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds and locations to attempt the course, The Trust wanted to find a way to deliver and assess this course online. This would enable organisations to create a better qualified workforce which would help to provide high quality early education in relation to children’s language and communication.

Our thoughts

The Communication Trust asked DDL to develop a strategy for creating, delivering and assessing the whole accredited course online. There was a requirement to create engaging, simple to use learning materials and marry that to an appropriate assessment system.

Accessible

With interactive learning materials, downloadable activity documents and a fully functioning online assessment system, users are able to easily access and complete their qualification online anytime, anywhere. This makes it easier for those who previously struggled to access the qualification due to geographical or time constraints.

Creative

Producing an enhanced online e-learning version of their legacy learning materials allowed us to enrich the educational experience. Adding graphical elements as well as animations and interactive activities, where appropriate, helped us to deliver the learning in a more engaging format.

Helpful

To ensure new users feel confident with using the system we included step by step help videos, easy to find user manuals and integrated user forums where learners can share their thoughts with one another. Discussion boards enable learner and assessor dialogue, so that whatever the issue, learners can easily get the assistance they need.
